TMJ stiffness: This is usually caused from bruxing--clenching or grinding your teeth. If you brux at night, have your dentist make you a night guard. Also notice if you grind or clench during the day. This is very common; it is a stress-related habit. You're teeth should only touch when you are chewing food. Otherwise they should be separated. Remember--lips together, teeth apart.

Need to know cause: Tmj stiffnesss can be a symptom, that if left untreated, can lead to more severe problems. The cause of the problem is very significant and normally, if you experience popping/clicking and limited opening (locking) or closing of the jaw, see your dentist/a specialist before your suffering becomes enhanced.

Clenching Control: Any reduction in load forces to the tm joint will aid in preventing joint stiffness. The only devise that can reduce these tremendous loading forces at night by 70 percent is the nti devise.

A few things.: Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
