Risk: Pancreas transplantation requires a big operation, and a commitment to lifelong immunosuppresion and monitoring. Malignancy and infection are contraindications. Advanced age, obesity, vascular, cardiac or pulmonary disease, and prior abdominal surgeries all impact on surgical risk. Candidacy can only be determined in consultation with an expert. Hypertension is common and not a contraindication.
