Multiple Ways: Gum disease is a generic phrase that can mean different things. It can refer to either gingivitis or periodontal disease. In short, gingivitis is a term that relates to a reversible disorder that affects the gums only. Periodontal disease is usually thought of as a progression of this disease process in which the disorder now affects both gums and the supporting structures (bone loss).

Usually the whole: Gum disease or periodontitis is caused by bacteria that is found in the whole mouth. However, in combination with trauma to one side of the mouth, that side can be worse than the other.

Both: It can either be site specific, or generalized in the whole mouth. Back teeth seem to be more susceptible because of root shapes and being harder to properly clean...
