40% cure rate.: Survival after surgery only for stage 3 colon cancer (i. E. With lymph node involvement) depends on a number of factors including tumor site, number of lymph nodes involved, degree of differentiation and other biologic factors. The average 5 year survival is about 40%, but ranges from 20 to 60% depending on these other factors.

Why?: Depends on the number of nodes involved and other factors but in average would be 40-50%. The question would be: why aren't you getting chemo? Current standards recommend post operative chemo for patients with stage iii colon cancer and pre or post chemo and radiation for stage ii or iii rectal cancer. If you are not getting chemo by choice, please reconsider. Either way best of luck.
