After a full thyroidectomy a year ago, i keep getting sore throats, can there be a connection to the operation please?

Unlikely: Recurrent sore throats is not a common or likely side affect of thyroidectomy. If let your surgeon know and if he is not concerned (depending on your individual case), then an ENT visit will be worthwhile assuming the original surgeon wasn't an ENT :).
