Retention cyst: While, smooth, cyst like lesions on the surface of the tonsils are usually mucous retention cysts. They usually burst spontaneously, do not cause symptoms other than concern, and need no treatment. They are benign and are not cancerous or pre-cancerous. Sometimes, stones can form in the tonsils too.
