Several combinations: Probably a combination of a mood stabilizer & an antipsychotic--if u have someone in your family who is doing well on meds start with what is helping them.

Fanapt (iloperidone): Fanapt (iloperidone) is a new antipsychotic with a low side effect profile. I have very good results in my patients with mixed mood states using this medication. It is not yet officially approved for this use, but not many things are. So, I am giving my perspective from my own clinical experience with it. I would obviously recommend discussing it with your psychiatrist. I hope it helps you as much as it has help some of my patients that were previously not treatable.

Valproic acid: Valproic acid is a first line choice for treatment of bipolar disorder with a rapid cycling course and mixed episodes. Presence of psychosis leads need to consider combination treatment with antipsychotic medication. Antidepressants should be discontinued if prescribed.
