Biopsy for diagnosis: Not to rule out. It is difficult to say without looking at the lesions, the description suggests vasculitis.

Many possibilities : They could be trying to rule out erythema nodosum, panniculitis, erythema induration (modular vascular is), subacute lupus. Erythema nodosum can be caused by infection or allergic reaction to medications.
