Maybe: There are different antibiotic regimens for implant surgery. It depends on your dentist and also the situation. While most will probably need some kind of antibiotic regimen, certain cases may not need it.

Depends: It depends on the preference of the surgeon. Antibiotics usually are prescribed to prevent the occurrence of an infection. Ask your dental implant doctor what his or her protocol is.

YES: We always advise antibiotic treatment. While we prefer to limit antibiotics to when they are necessary. This is a surgery which can go very badly off the track and need to be redone if bacterial infection occurs. We feel it is prudent to use antibiotics and use probiotics afterward to restore your systems.

Not necessarily: Not necessarily. It depends on the surgeon. There is a study done by the veterans administration which shows antibiotics may be beneficial depending on the skill of the surgeon. In addition if a bone graft is planned then antibiotic therapy may be beneficial as well. Of course if there are systemic conditions which result in a compromised immune system or compromised healing ie. Diabetes, then yes.

Probably: The literature supports the use of antibiotics immediately prior to ( prophylaxis) surgery. The data is a bit more conflicted postoperatively. That said, most surgeons use antibiotics for a brief time after detnal implant surgery.

No: Unless the doctor thinks that you will get an infection. You may get an infection if they had placed the implant into infected bone or if your immune system isn't working well. In general one should not need to take antibiotics after dental implant placement.

Yes and no: Technically no... But there are many situations where antibiotics would be considered. For example... Implant placed into extraction site, bone grafting with implant or evidence of recent or current infection.

Not necessarily: Unless you need it for other conditions, not necessarily. If the site is not infected, most often no antibiotics are prescribed. Some will prescribe no matter what, just to be doubly sure. All a matter of situation at the time and dr's opinion.

Dental implant: It is only wise and logical to use antibiotic with surgery. In my practice i prescribe antibiotic with any oral surgery including placement of dental implants. Oral cavity is populated with countless bacteria. Oral surgery creates "wound" which can be used as a portal for the bacteria to enter inside of the body and initiate infection.

Maybe: Some doctors give antibiotics after implant placement. They are given to prevent infection since a dental implant is a foreign body and if it gets infected during the healing phase it will fail. Some doctors do not give antibiotics afterwards, just one or two doses prior to the procedure as prophylaxis. There are several studies that give merit to both. I give antibiotics for the week after.

Depends: Placement of dental implants is a surgical procedure. Depending upon your surgeons philosophy he/she may or may not place you on an antibiotic following the procedure.

Most do: Most surgeons prescribe antibiotics. There is only one study that seems to support not using them, the rest of the studies recommend their use.

Typically most: Clinicians prescribe a short course of antibiotics, and some also utilize topical applications like a perioguard rinse. An oral surgical site is different from a dermatologic site, in the sense of having a higher concentration of bacteria which can colonize a surgical wound. I do not prescribe antibiotics prophylactically for any other procedure except for bone grafting and implant procedures.

Depends on your case: Whether or not you need an antibiotic after a dental implant procedure depends on several factors, including your medical history, the number of implants placed, and even the experience of the surgeon. You should always receive a standard prophylactic dosage of antibiotics one hour before implant surgery. However, if it is a simple case with no difficulties, you shouldn't need more antibiotics.

Possibly: Your implant surgeon would be the best individual to decide this as an option. Was there a chance the surgical site was infected, was the implant placed in conjunction with a sinus lift, was the implant placed the same time as the extraction, do you take meds that compromise your immune system, etc... Discuss your personal situation and find out what's best for you!
