Floss threader: Often times swollen gums are a result of poor hygiene. Tooth brushing and mouth rinses are good, but flossing is also necessary. Your orthodontist should have samples of floss threading aides in the office.

Try a water pik: It is very difficult to floss teeth with braces. I recommend using a water pil to my patients with braces to clean around the brackets and under the wire.

Use a Hydrofloss: Hydrofloss is a great quality product and it lasts for many years... If you do purchase a oral irrigator, remember to start on a very low number until your gums become stronger. It is not a substitute for flossing, but it is a nice addition. I also recommend my patients consider swishing with coconut oil. 1 tsp for 5 minutes... Spit out and repeat 3 times total.

Floss threaders: Floss threaders can facilitate your flossing by making it easier to get the floss under your orthodontic wires. If you have swollen gums, then you need specific instructions from your orthodontist on home care with your tooth brush and floss. More frequent visits with your family dentist for cleanings and check-ups during braces are also recommended.

Very carefully: Use floss threader (available at drug store) to feed floss daily under the wire. Or use proxibrush daily. Or use rubber tip daily. Water pik used daily will help clean between teeth, bring down swelling, and get you out of braces sooner.
