1-2 weeks: Surgery on the hand always causes swelling. The best thing you can do is to keep it elevated all of the time since most of the swelling is water and water runs downhill.

Several weeks: Hand swelling is common after a carpal tunnel release. Take it easy on the hand for a few weeks and the swelling should resolve. I tell my patients to give the hand a chance to heal.
