Many steps: Usually the lower and the upper jaws are moved into the proper position to achieve the best bite and esthetics possible. Your orthodontist certainly usually is part of the team. Expect some discomfort and swelling after the surgery. Most patients recover well. I am sure your surgery will run very smooth. Let me congratulate you ahead on this very big decision.

Crazy detail: Orthognathic surgery is extremely complex. Sit down with your local board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon to discuss specifics. Each surgery is unique based on the patients treatment plan.

Jaw surgery: Basically, the upper jaw is moved forward and lower jaw back to fix the bite and enhance the profile at the same time. The procedure takes about 3 hours. The first week is the toughest one. You will have a hard time breathing through your nose. By the end of third and fourth week, you will be 100%.
