Can you get muscle atrophy on your thumb if you ignore carpal tunnel for years and will surgery fix it?

Yes, and may be: Carpal tunnel can cause atrophy of the thenar (thumb) muscles and it may recover following surgery, provided the damage to the nerves has not become irreversible. See this site for more information on this topic. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/pmh0001469/.

Great question: Many surgeons have know for years and recent literature support that even severely wasted thenars may come back but i would not expect full return. Even dr phalen's 1966 paper mentions that often recovery was evident (a great read )http://jbjs.Org/article.Aspx?Articleid=14469 but why is there a difference in the nerve in some cases? Yes this video may help http://www.Showme.Com/sh/?H=f18emk0.
