Sorry to hear...: Sorry to hear about your wife. A person in your situation may benefit from a couple of family trips to the pediatrician. Once the pediatrician confirms that the child is normal (presuming that he is), then attention can be given to helping the mom.

Potentially harmful: Potential harms are development of dental caries with night feeds and obesity from overfeeding. A neurotypical child that age can both finger-feed himself & use a spoon, spilling little. Not allowing him to do so hampers development of independent self-help skills. First you & your wife together need to hear what his pede has to say. Try to state the problem without shame or blame.
