Croup: It's important to differentiate the heavy breathing: Is it fast but comfortable? Is it fast and looks labored? Is it fast and noisy? If it's noisy, is it a congested, phlegmy sound? Is it stridor (higher pitched and mostly heard while breathing in?). The fever can make breathing fast. Croup/cold can also contribute to fast breathing as well as provide congestion sounds. Mgt: If your child is still breathing uncomfortably, another visit is indicated. Cool air mist and nasal saline drops can also be used.
