Variable: There are some articles out there disputing barefoot, however my advise is to start slow, short and give your feet a break in between. Too much too soon can cause problems. Start with flats.

Be careful: As true barefoot running obviously has to be undertaken in a area with limited damaging material(think sharp pointy objects) on the ground. Even if you are using minimalist shoes, understand that if you choose to goes this route to run, you have to ease into footwear like this, particularly if your previous shoes were heavily cushioned.

Other ways: as an avid runner who has researched the topic-- I know what you are trying to achieve, indeed I had the same goals years ago. But rather than actually going barefoot, try a "barefoot style" running shoe (e.g., Nike Free") that will help you still land ball of foot first, but keep you from injuries from stepping on things.
