Short of fusion?: Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine. Most cases are idiopathic (unknown cause). It can be observed, braced, or operated on. The only cure is surgery, but it is reserved for severe cases. Even with surgery, patients with scoliosis have more episodes of acute and chronic back pain.
