Infection!: The reason that open fractures get special attention is because infection in the bone (osteomyelitis) can be very difficult to treat. Not all open fractures are the same. Long bone fractures, like the tibia, usually occur during high energy trauma and more likely to lead to infection. Prompt irrigation and debridement, IV antibiotics, and stabilization of the bone decreases to rate of infection.
