Are partial dentures comfy?

Yes generally: Pds can be very comfortable however they collect more plaque and are harder to keep clean esp teeth they anchor to so if you can you are better off with a fixed bridge as pds need replacing every 5 yrs or so as the teeth on the pd wears. It is a cost benefit decision.

Partials: Not as comfortable as your own teeth, a fixed permanent bridge or implant supported crowns. Comfort is subjective. Some patients do better with them than others.

Mostly: Today there are many choices for removable partial dentures. The conventional metal clasps and hard acrylic are the norm. However today you can have a soft liner built in to the underside of the denture that contacts your gums. There are also several choices for non-metal clasps. Most patients find the dentures comfortable. If you do not , there are additional options.

To a degree: Partial dentures are foreign objects. As such i would not necessary call them "comfy". However, many patients accommodate just fine to them. Certainly there can be an absence of pain and discomfort. It may not be unfair to compare to contact lenses. I have worn contact lenses for over 30 years. While they may be free from pain and discomfort most of the time, i wouldn't consider them "comfy".

Partials 'comfy'?: Mostly, partials are comfy after an adjustment period. A partial that has natural teeth on both sides of missing teeth do better for patients than those that are supported by teeth only on one side. Implant supported partials give that kind of support and more, and are desired by more of my patients who would never go back to unsupported partials. Ask your dds/dmd about implants for partials.

As comfy: As any denture can possibly be. Understand it is a device that is going to clasp onto some natural teeth and will cover areas of the mouth that have otherwise not been covered. The corresponding tissues will also have to adjust. Hope this helps.

Varies: The answer is based on patient's ability to tolerate a removable partial. Partials may irritate underlying soft tissue as patient chew with them. In addition, some patients complain of food collection under the partial. A better option to replace missing teeth is dental implants.

Depends on you: A removeable partial denture's comfort depends on you. It is an appliance that is designed to use healthy teeth as connectors, replace missing teeth and restore function and esthetics (if needed). The are made to come in and out for cleansability. Whether they are comfy or not depends on how adaptable you are to this foreign object. Good luck!
