Yes, It all depends: There are several critical tendon around the ankle that can cause pain when there is a split tear. The tendons on the outside are the peroneals. The tendons have considerable excursion, movement, and will cause pain and swelling. Ocasionally they will dislocate. Initial treatment is non-surgical. I don't reccomend cortisone injections when there is a split tear.

Ankle tendonitis: It is very common to have a burning sensation with a tendon tear, and this is usually due to the surrounding inflammatory reaction. A nerve injury needs to be ruled out as well, however.
