I am a type ii diabetic. my doctor started me on short acting and long acting insulin. does that indicate that my pancreas is no longer working?

Dr. James Chu answered

Insulin deficiency: People with type 2 diabetes have both resistance to Insulin (inability of Insulin to cause muscle and fat to take in glucose), as well as varying degrees of Insulin deficiency (inadequate production of Insulin by pancreas). With time, there is less Insulin production from pancreas, and thus will need injected Insulin to control glucose. The c-peptide test measures residual Insulin made by pancreas.
