Depends on cause...: Sgpt (alt) is an enzyme that comes out of damaged liver cells but also from muscle cells. Treatment depends on the underlying reason that is causing the enzyme to leak into the blood. For example, if it is due to obesity and fatty liver disease, then the patient must become un-obese. One's primary care doctor can explain why the elevated sgpt, and that helps explain the treatment options.
