Cesarean section.: Omphaloceles have a 30-40% risk of serious or lethal fetal chromosome anomalies (especially the smaller ones). Giant fetal omphaloceles can cause hydrops and preterm delivery that should be via cesarean section if the extruded liver is >5 cm in size to avoid exsanguination at birth from liver laceration. After "paint-and-wait" stay in the nicu most babies do well if no chromosome problems exist.

30-40%: Omphalocele is an abdominal wall defect that allows herniation of abdominal organs into the umbilical cord. Herniated organs may be intestine, liver, sometimes the heart (in very rare cases). There is a risk of associated defects involving the heart, kidneys and the brain. The risk is 30-40%.
