Guideline: If you were truly and correctly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, guidelines recommend diet/exercise in addition to metformin therapy (if no contraindication). Talk to you doctor about why he/she thinks you should wait.

Your doctor may feel: that your diabetes can be controlled with diet and exercise and weight loss. This is often possible in mild or early type II Diabetes. Double check with your doctor, but it may be worth giving this a try before starting medications. Best wishes!
