Virus and Stress: Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) may be caused by a virus that stays inactive in your body until you are stressed or experience illness such as a cold. In addition, it could be caused by a vitamin B12 or vitamin d deficiency. Take a multi-vitamin everyday, spend some time in the sun, and find ways decrease stress. Your dentist or doctor can also prescribe an antiviral.

Causes: Canker Sore: Unfortunately the cause of most canker sores is not known. Stress or tissue injury is probably the cause. Also some foods -- including citrus or acidic fruits and vegetables (such as lemons, oranges, pineapples, apples, figs, tomatoes, and strawberries) -- can trigger a canker sore or make the problem worse. Sls in toothpaste has also been implicated.
