My 2yr old has developed small soft semi painfull lumps at the base of his skull any ideas as to what they are ?

Lymph nodes maybe?: Soft lumps especially paired at the base of the skull could be occipital lymph nodes ! no mention if on top of skin within the skin or below! but any worries please have an md look at for reassurance ! regards.

Your son : May possibly have hair follicles inflamed causing it to be painful . Very common in children. Some do need to be treated if with fever. Otherwise self limiting. It is called follicilitis.The lymph nodes maybe inflamed too. Get it checked out .In the meantime you can give tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin for pain.
