Abnormal cells: The pap test is for abnormal cells on on a woman's cervix. The test can detect both normal, pre-cancerous and cancer cells. It involves gently scraping the cervix to collect the cells, then they go to a pathologist who examines the specimen under a microscope. The results are then reported back to the one who performed the test. Paps are almost always painless. Good question.
