Needles, shocks: An electrical study of nerve, muscle, and neuromuscular connections. A small needle is inserted into muscle, and electrical shocks are used to measure nerve integrity. The test is objective with comparison to prior normal parameters and can help a physician confirm a diagnosis of nerve or muscle problems.

Needle into muscle: In needle EMG (elecromyography) a small needle electrode is inserted into several muscles and measurements are identified through this electrode. The needle records different types of electrical changes that occur when a nerve or muscle is damaged. The EMG is usually combined with a nerve conduction study (ncs/ncv) to yield info on damaged peripheral nerves or muscle.
