How severe?: I have seen a young lady die of severe anemia after a hemoglobin of 3 for a week, after chronic hemoglobins of 5. I have rarely seen problems with hemoglobins over five, though i will typically transfuse in the 7's to keep the hemoglobin above 8. Acutely, we probably will see cardiac effects from bleeding or hemolysis losses of four pints of blood or less. Chronic anemia can be compensated.
