A member asked:

If you are anemic from iron deficiency, does that put you at risk for leukemia? or is there some connection between anemia and leukemia? also, is leukemia hereditary? my mom gets iron deficient anemia and my grandma (her mom) died of leukemia?

Iron is a necessary vitamin that is part of important enzyme activities in the body. It is also the limiting agent in successful creation of your blood. You lose iron daily shedding skin & in other ways. Iron deficiency does cause anemia, but deficiency does not trigger leukemia. Only very rare forms of leukemia have anything to do with inherited genes.

Iron deficiency is not related to leukemia. Many women have iron deficiency due to menstrual blood loss. Your mom should take oral iron and multivitamins to address iron deficiency. Wish you and your mom good health!
