Variable effects: There are many possible outcomes from child abuse & neglect. The most tragic is when the same things are perpetrated upon children. It can cause severe anxiety, depression, flashbacks, dissociation, trouble with trust & boundaries, drug & alcohol abuse, & suicide attempts. It can also lead to perfectionism and high achievement. With treatment, the person can heal and enjoy a fulfilling life.

Does childhood abuse and neglect often lead to adult criminal behavior?

Maybe: Abused children are much more highly represented among the ranks of poor learners, misbehaving, aggressive and oppositional conduct disordered kids. These conditions can subsequently lead to adult criminal behavior if interventions don't occur in childhood.
