A member asked:

If you were sexually abused as a child, what will happen when i become an adult?

Varies: There is no size fits all. If you have resolved the issues involved with your abuse you may have no repercussions. On the other hand if you have not dealt with these issues then you may become an overprotective parent or even abusive as an adult.

Good to bad: First and foremost the child needs to be removed from the environment where the abuse took place, then needs psychological intervention with followup. Of course, the child or teen must understand that it was not their fault and they need to be placed in a safe, supportive, and if possible loving environment. I have seen some cases where the teen/adult grows up and forms perfect relationships.

Many Possibilities: There are many different possible outcomes to sexual abuse. It is not automatic that these children will have problems as adults, but there is a higher risk of emotional and behavioral difficulties.
