When less won't do: The law and medical ethics say that care should be provided in the "least restrictive environment" possible. Since psychiatric wards are fairly restrictive, they should be used only when office visits or day treatment programs won't do. Usual reasons: suicide or violence risk; severe psychosis, mania, or depression that prevents functioning outside the hospital; need for careful med adjustment.
