Go to surgeon: Usually a dry socket is best treated by returning to the surgeon. A dry socket is where the clot is lost and exposes the nerve in the socket where the tooth was removed. Antibiotics and pain pills are usually ineffective for dry socket. The surgeon have medicines and packings they can place to alleviate the pain. The treatment is usually for 2-3 days.

Dry socket: A dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms following an extraction breaks down and the bone is exposed. This can be very painful, and should be treated by your dentist. The socket will be packed with a medication that will have to be replaced frequently until the healing starts. Otc pain medication should be sufficient, but your dentist may prescribe something stronger.

Treat or not: Dry sockets heal with or without treatment. Your surgeon can pack socket for pain relief. Or treat with pain meds. Go back to surgeon for evaluation and recommendations.
