An excellent question.: For example seasonal affective disorder, a type of depression with less sunshine in Winter months is a very real and established psychiatric syndrome. A simple supplement Vitamin D3 5000 International Units every morning can help offset aka the sunshine vitamin. There is plethora of scientific evidence eg gold standard double blind random placebo controlled studies, see Google scholar. Your doc must supervise and take yearly blood levels to easily avoid toxicity. More crucial eat veggies, drink water, sleep well exercise, meditate. Take care.

Light: Natural therapies for depression include full spectrum lights in the winter months especially, and to mimic sunlight. Absence of exposure to these rays has negative effects on brain. Sunlight penetrates skull and brain to depth of the pineal gland, as sheep head studies have shown. The craft store "Michaels" has desk top models of full spectrum lamps. Read book "Light and Health" by John Ott.
