Ob-Gyn can evaluate: Blood appears brighter red if it is fresher or has more oxygen, and looks dark or black if it has been around longer. Hormonal changes around menopause or perimenopause may cause changes in the quality & thickness of the uterine lining, and in the amount of blood flow & the time it takes to flow out. These things can make one's period flow change in appearance. An ob-gyn doctor can evaluate it.
