Subscience: Most advice about "what to eat and not to eat" is subscience. I'm a swimmer and looked around online for the origin of this tale -- it turned out to be warning not to be drunk or eat something that will make you pass a lot of intestinal gas or that adds a lot of weight just before a competitive swim meet. The tale about not eating before a recreational swim doesn't seem evidence-based.
