May be: It depends on how much you eat. To lose weight you need to achieve negative caloric balance, i.e., burn more calories than you take in. Reduce your intake, and exercise more(easier said than done).

Depends : Just published in the new england journal of medicine this week showed med. Diet with olive oil/nuts was better at preventing cardiovascular events than a diet low in fat, but high in carbohydrates ( and therefore sugar). ?Med diet better or , perhaps, in spain where this was done, and med diet is usual diet. Perhaps low fat high carb is just worse. http://www.theheart.org/article/1511175.do.

Fish, olive, veggies: Olive oil, veggies, fish are the staples of the mediterranean diet and they are all packed with healthy nutrients and antioxidants. Of course the way of preparation is also important. Raw, stewed, or lightly grilled without butter or heavy sauces. My personal favorites are lentils, okra, eggplants, tomaties, peppers and wild mushrooms. Studies have shown that medi diet decreased cardiac mortality.
