Not the forceps: Fetal distress at the time of delivery often necessitates use of forceps to facilitate the delivery. The distress is often due to decrease in blood flow to the baby's brain. Hie is the term often used and can result in cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and hydrocephalus. This may result even if forceps are not used. The exact cause may never be determined.
