Up to 1 year: Nicotine can stay in your system for upto 72 hours. The byproducts of nicotine can stay in your system for upto 3 weeks. Nicotine can be found in your hair upto 1 year. The tar deposit from cigarettes in your lungs is usually permanent. This does not mean that quitting smoking won't change anything. Quitting smoking has numerous beneficial effects and some damage other than tar can be reverse.
