Surgery: At this time, cataracts are removed surgically through small incisions. The natural lens is then replaced with a permanent artificial lens.

Phaco: Modern cataract surgery is performed by breaking apart the cataract with ultrasonic energy (phaco emulsification ) then removing with fluidic pumps. Recent advances in femtosecond lasers are beginning to be used in cataract surgery ad well and may represent the future of how cataracts are removed.
