Not known: Asbestos is a natural fiber found in few places in the world. It is well known due its repellant properties agains fire & hot temperature. It was used in cloth, construction & ships. Still use on car brake system. It causes asbestosis a fibrotic condition of the lungs & mesothelial carcinoma acancer on the pleura.

Yes, if a smoker: Asbestos exposure can cause a lung scarring condition called "asbestosis, " which is different from emphysema. But, many times, those who have been exposed to asbestos have also smoked, and so they can end up getting emphysema. But, the two are not necessarily connected.
