A member asked:

Is it fine to sleep a lot when you have emphysema?

Yes: But if the sleeping is out of the ordinary for the person with emphysema, or they are too difficult to arouse, and/or confused, i would seek immediate medical attention to make sure that co2 levels are normal.

Sleep is good: Enough sleep is very important for anyone, not just patients with emphysema. That said, if you are sleeping a lot more than normal for you, that may be an indication that something is not right. For example, your carbon dioxide level may be too high. So, enough sleep is good: too much sleep (meaning more than normal for you) may mean something is wrong. Get checked out.

Yes: It is typical for patients with emphysema to sleep a great deal. Often people with emphysema expend considerable energy just breathing. Thus they are fatigued and often sleep more. Other factors could be involved such as an elevated carbon dioxide or infection, thus if this is an acute change a doctor needs to be consulted.
