100%: Is a tall order. Consistent exercise, strengthening of all the muscles around the knee and the butt. I prefer less impact sports on knees like cycling.

Many ways: Generally, stretching/flexibility and strengthening (including quads and hamstrings), keep mobile, exercise without overdoing it. Some exercises to consider: http://orthoinfo.Aaos.Org/pdfs/rehab_knee_6.Pdf (but depends on if you have pain/knee problems, in which case should be examined by a dr first).
