Yes: The best way to find why your son is making kidney stones, is to find what kind of stones were passed and then do further work up accordingly. Many doctors do like to wait and see if they recur before proceeding with work up.

Agree with Dr. S: It would have been useful to have the stones tested. Your son should drink enough water every day so that his urine is mostly colorless. Keeping the urine dilute will prevent stone formation.
