A member asked:

Does a dilated right ventricle ever require open heart surgery? if not, can a person live normally & actively with one? cause of dilation is unknown.

Not usually: There are many possible causes of rv dilatation, including lung disease, pulm hypertension, sleep apnea and tricuspid regurgitation (leaky valve). Depending on the cause most people will live normally. The rv can be hard to judge on echocardiogram, and sometimes an rv might seem dilated due to technical artifact but actually be normal. It depends: It depends on the cause of the dilation, the function of the heart (including the left side), how long it has been going on, and the symptoms of the patient.
