Catheter is worst.: Many treatments for this but medically they are primarily grouped into Alpha agents and 5 Alpha reductase inhibitors. Of course there is always turp, catheter and suprapubic cath. Sounds like you already have one of these. Hopefully you are in transition.

Catheter: Catheters are never a good option for a healthy 54 year old. I would assume that you developed an additional problem such as prostatitis on top of BPH to end up with a catheter. Discuss options with a urologist for BPH treatment after the current situation has resolved.
