It could matter: The difference between bipolar i disorder and cyclothymia could be signicant and has to do with the presence or absence of a manic epidode. The treatment could be different. Bipolar i disorder involves mania and is a more severe condition than cyclothymia and may involve treatment with medications which are more powerful such as those in the class called antipsychotics. Please discuss with the dr.

Unequal evidence bas: The evidence base (rigorous controlled trials to show what treatments work and which do not) is much more extensive for bipolar i disorder than for cyclothymia. While there are many approved treatments for bpi, there don't appear to be any agents w fda approval for cyclothymia, and pubmed shows very few treatments trials. So treatment for cyclothymia is less-well grounded.

Similar: Treatment is similar, but not identical, as varying dosages of moos stabilizers are used. Monitor the symptoms, stay in regular contact with your psychiatrist to facilitate med changes if needed, and find a reputable psychotherapist who specializes in mood disorders.
