A member asked:

How will they correct an oedema in the disc space following a discectomy and how do they take a biopsy of it?

Observation: Most "edema" in a disc space after a discectomy are part of normal MRI post-operative findings, and correction is not necessary. Sometimes with clinical findings, a biopsy may be needed to determine infection/inflammation. Usually that is done with a biopsy, often with a needle with ct scanning. The findings may also be associated with a spinal instability, which may need stabilization.

Biopsy with a needle: But can be a normal post op finding or a sign of a disc space infection. Blood tests in terms of a c reactive protein level, erythrocyte sedimentation rate & white blood cell count can be done to see if this may be an issue as well as monitoring you for any fever, chills or sweats or wound healing issues consistent with an infection. Increasing back pain is another sign especially with spasms.
