A member asked:

How long should my son stay out of school after a broken elbow with surgery?

Depends: That would be up to your orthopedist. There are usually a day or so and usually less than a week of rest and elevation and use of ice and pain meds and then depending on the splinting and comfort, the child can return to scool with the proper accommodations. Being out more than a week would seem like a long time to me unless complicated fracture.

Ask: There is much variability to the individual scenarios. Your surgeon is the best person to ask.

Not long: If he is pain free in a cast or sling he should be able to go to school.

Elbow surgery: Most surgeries can warrant at least a day off from school. Consult with your treating orthopedist to clarify any specific restrictions they may feel would be necessary to optimize his outcome.

Ask UR doc: This is based on type of fracture, and type of surgery, and the stability if the repair, so ask the surgeon their recommendation.

Talk to MD: If the child has well controlled pain and is excused from physical activity there should be no problem with returning to school. The best guide will be the surgeon who performed the operation.
